You’ve accomplished what at one time seemed inconceivable!
You’ve gotten clean and sober and made major changes in your life. You’ve attended meetings, worked the Steps and you are “practicing these principles in all your affairs”. You’ve probably spent time in therapy and healed many issues from your past. You’ve done most everything you’re supposed to do, and your life is better in so many ways. But you know there’s more work to do.
If you are not “brimming over with self-reliance and contentment” (page xxix of the Big Book) and not experiencing “a sense of victory, followed by such a peace and serenity”, and “utter confidence” (page 14 of the Big Book) then it’s time to really get down to causes and conditions. Get out of your own way and get the life you were meant to have. The mind that got you into trouble can’t be the one to get you out.
The Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous (page 64) states, “Our liquor (drugs, food, debting, etc.) was but a symptom. So we had to get down to causes and conditions.” It also states that unless we can again find the perfect peace and ease which alcohol (drugs, food, debting, etc.) used to give us, we will return to drinking. Page 69 of the Big Book reads, “Whatever our ideal turns out to be, we must be willing to grow toward it. Page 133 of the Big Book states, “A body badly burned by alcohol (addictions) does not often recover overnight nor do twisted thinking and depression vanish in a twinkling.” “Therefore, the main problem of the alcoholic centers in his mind rather than in his body.”
You might think of returning to therapy because that’s the usual move when we think something is wrong with us. If you’re in a 12 step program, you could increase your meetings, re-do the steps, or change sponsors. You might add another 12 step program or two to the one you’re already working. Maybe you’re thinking of giving up on program altogether. Or you could do nothing and hope that your problems go away on their own.
The 12 Steps are meant to stop the bleeding and to get you to a place where you can launch your life. It’s similar to going to the emergency room after a major trauma—you’ve been put back together, but now what? If the 12 Step program is like the emergency room, coaching is similar to physical therapy, and plastic surgery. The 12 Step Programs have literally saved millions of lives. But what happens after the 12th step? How do you get on the “Broad Highway” of life?
Strategic Results Coaching can take the addictive personality into a future place of gratifying productiveness to experience the reality of achieved goals and successes which might ordinarily remain unmet (How’s your relationship? Is financial insecurity still worrying you sick? Do you have the career you’ve always wanted? Is your home orderly/organized? Does your outer world still reflect your inner world? Are you free from self-loathing?) Unachieved goals and unrealized potential are a threat to the addict’s sober future. Strategic Results Coaching can break this unproductive cycle and flip you into a place of realized dreams, where the focus is on the future, instead of the destructive past.
How does coaching differ from a sponsor or counselor/therapist?
Sponsors come from 12-step programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous, Overeater Anonymous, Sex Addicts Anonymous, and Debtors Anonymous, etc. Sponsors are not paid professionals; they benefit personally from the service they give you by staying clean and sober or abstinent themselves. Sponsors have a singleness of purpose—they stick with the steps and traditions. Often the focus is on cleaning up the past. Strategic Results Coaching will support you in creating and living a great future. Coaching isn’t limited to using the steps and traditions but works on your dreams and plans and helps you effectively find solutions to problems.
Strategic Results Coaching works great along with the 12 Step Program but should not be considered a substitute; because they are different.
Strategic Results Coaching will help you leverage the strengths you have gained in recovery into something really wonderful. You will get clear about what you want to do with the rest of your life and then do it. With Strategic Results Coaching you will find the courage to reach for your dreams.
Strategic Results Coaching can help you bridge the gap between where you are now and where you want to be— personally and professionally. Coaching can help you gain the confidence to plan out what you want from life and how to get there.
You can stop regarding sobriety as the only relevant measure of success in your life and start focusing on achieving your full potential. Strategic Results Coaching can empower you and help you fill the hole left by addiction with promise and potential.
The Twelve Step Programs are truly miraculous.
I will be forever grateful to Bill Wilson.
